From his studio, Daumier often saw women returning from the Seine. They climbed the stone stairs with heavy, wet laundry, sometimes accompanied of children.The Laundress in the Musée d'Orsay collection is considered to be the best work from several versions of this theme painted by Daumier. Another worth seeing is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. All versions are characterized by monumentalism, typical for great historical themes, here emphasizing the heroism of routine activities. A little more -The Laundress seems to be talking to her child in Daumier's painting, beating the last steps.
I see people moving everyday from my window. Sometimes the sound of the suitcase wheels breaks the silence. They go in a hurry. Inspired by Daumier's work, I showed them seen against the light.
